These cops have a nose for drunk drivers

Sharp-nosed OPP officers took a pair of impaired drivers off the road Sunday.

At approximately 5:05 a.m., Powassan Detachment OPP officers were called to a single motor vehicle collision on Stone Road in Callander.

When they arrived, they saw a vehicle pinned up against a hydro pole, and fire and ambulance were on scene. 

After speaking with the driver, officers detected the odour of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. The driver was arrested at the scene for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and taken to the North Bay Police Service for breath tests. The tests revealed that he had over the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

Joseph Walsh, 23, of McKellar Township, west of Sundridge, is charged with:

  • Driving While Ability Impaired by Alcohol and
  • Driving with More Than 80 mg of Alcohol in Blood

Walsh was issued a 90-day Automatic Drivers Licence Suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. He was released on a Promise to Appear.

In the second incident that same day, at approximately 12:40 p.m., North Bay Detachment officers were conducting a RIDE program on Highway 17B, in Nipissing First Nation. 

A vehicle approached and, while speaking with the driver, officers detected the odour of an alcoholic beverage on her breath. 

The driver was arrested and taken to the North Bay OPP Detachment for further breath tests. The tests revealed that she had over the legal limit of alcohol in her blood.

Szonja Jakovits-LaFramboise, 48, of Toronto, is charged with Driving with More Than 80 mg of Alcohol in Blood.

She was issued a 90-day Automatic Drivers Licence Suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. 

She was released on a Promise to Appear.
