Dressed in their best red clothing 284 military members, their families and community as a whole gathered at the North Bay Waterfront Friday for the second annual 22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base ‘Red Friday Waterfront Walk’.

Wearing Red on Fridays is a symbolic gesture to show Canadian troops that the country cares and honours those who have fought and continue to fight for Canadian’s freedom.

Colonel Martin Galvin says the message that the walk sends is that Canadians support the men and women serving in Afghanistan.

“The walk is a great way to get the community all out and focused on the same message which is we support our Canadian Forces members, our troops that are in theatre. “

Galvin also confided that this year’s walk was a bittersweet one for him as it was his last public duty before giving up command of CFB North Bay June 2nd. However, Galvin will be back to the Bay as this is the community he will spend his retirement days.

“I try to put it out of my mind because I am not settled with leaving yet because I love North Bay,” he states.

“I’ve made up my mind I’m retiring in North Bay ... I’ll be back for sure ... It’s tough because the people in North Bay and in particular the folks that work at the Wing are such a great team and it’s been the best job I’ve ever had.”
