Updated 4 p.m.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry North Bay District is advising area residents of a  flood warning for the entire area bordering the Sturgeon River above the West Nipissing Power Upper Sturgeon River Generating Station within the Municipality of West Nipissing and Springer Township.

For municipalities, townships and residents that border the Sturgeon River above the Ontario Power Generation Crystal Falls Generating Station including the communities of Field and River Valley as well as Grant, Field, Badgerow, Gibbons, Crerar, Janes and Dana Townships.

Water levels and flows along the Sturgeon River above the West Nipissing Power Upper Sturgeon River Generating Station at Sturgeon Falls and above Ontario Power Generation’s facility at Crystal Falls on the Sturgeon River are expected to rise because of issues with dam operability at the Upper Sturgeon River Dam due to the cold conditions.

West Nipissing Power has requested that Ontario Power Generation reduce flow at their Crystal Falls Generating Station as well as their Tomiko and Red Cedar Control Dams to allow their workers to repair the issue in a lower water condition at the Upper Sturgeon River Dam.

The reduction in flow at the Upper Sturgeon River Dam, Crystal Falls Dam, Red Cedar Dam, and Tomiko Dam may result in flooding in low lying areas as well as unsafe ice.

All OPG dams on the Sturgeon River system remain fully functional and there are no issues or concerns with their safe operation.

Municipalities, townships, and residents along the Sturgeon River portion of the watershed are encouraged to prepare for potential high water levels and to stay off the ice and away from river banks.
