On December 2, between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. the Lions/ CTV Children’s Christmas Telethon will be broadcast live from Canadore College and Nipissing University with the production crewed mainly by Canadore students.

“I would say 80 per cent of the crew is Canadore Television and Journalism students … out of 10 cameras eight of them will be manned by Canadore TV students,” said Yura Monestime, professor of the Broadcasting – Television and Video Production program who is directing the Telethon along with faculty member Karen Young.

The students are involved in all aspects of the production including video, sound, lighting, editing, and on-air interviews, giving them critical hands-on experience in a live production.

“It is absolutely beneficial. It is a perfect example of the education system working with people outside the education community…and showing these students what it is like in the real world,” said Monestime.

Approximately 30 students along with faculty and Canadore staff will be volunteering their time on Saturday.

“Students have a chance to work with the community which will help to give them the production skills they need to be effective in the real world,” said Steve Ray, professor of the Television program who is also helping to coordinate the event.

CTV Canada’s head Lighting Director, Linus MacDonald, will be on-site donating his time along with a CTV Mobile, which is essentially a mini-studio on wheels.

The Telethon will be televised from the Canadore studio and the Nipissing Theater. Spectators are welcome to watch over 30 live acts at the Nipissing University Theatre.

The Telethon is a means of raising funds to provide toys to children in your area who might not otherwise have a Merry Christmas. The Lions Club also provides turkeys and hams for those families in need during the festive season.
