The Woodlands hallways were full of hockey players, Jedi Knights and super heroes earlier this week.
This wasn’t recess, this was actually part of a Steam Program presentation to the students at the Near North elementary school.
West Ferris Senior Secondary Students from the Steam Program, became the teachers on this day utilizing Apple technology.
Burke Walsh is a Steam Program student who turned into a teacher on this day. The 15-year-old grade 10 student was on his MacBook showing the elementary students how to import video onto an iMovie timeline. For this portion of the presentation, elementary students helped create movie trailers for Mighty Ducks, Karate Kid, Spider Man, Harry Potter and Star Wars.
“I like talking to the kids and interacting with them and showing them what we are learning in a more basic kind of way,” said Walsh.
“More kids will come into the program if they like this.”
Using iPhones the Steam students filmed the elementary actors who depicted various scenes from all the movies and then they worked together to combine that video material into a movie trailer with a Woodlands touch.
Woodlands is just one of a number of stops the Steam Program will make at Near North elementary schools.
For Walsh, the most rewarding part is finding out the elementary students want to try doing it at home.
"Last time a couple of them went on their iPads and they downloaded iMovie and they told us they are going to use iMovie when they get home and make their own videos so it’s good to know they will be using it," he said.
