Update: 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.

The mystery of wire being strung across local bike trails has been solved.

"We determined a company was performing integrity tests on the pipeline to ensure safety effectiveness. Part of the testing involves a communication line extended at waist level. The line is not made for strength. The company worked with the police to remove the wire," say police.

The Mountain Bike Association added an explanation. "The person(s) responsible came forward to share that they had left behind communication line materials from a project and it was not malicious in intent. They had planned to return to remove the material today, but trail users discovered it and removed it before they could. Thankfully, no one was hurt in discovering the trail hazards and the line was cleared."

North Bay police say they are concerned for the safety of people riding on bike trails off Ski Club Rd. at Johnston Rd. in the Graniteville section of the city.

Three separate wires have been reported strung across the trail at mid-height level, say police.

One mother reports a tripwire. "My children were biking in these trails the other day. After this discussion, they informed me that my son (10) ran over one that was about 1/2 a foot off the ground."

On the North Bay Mountain Bike Association Facebook page, it warns, "It has come to our attention that hazards have been placed on a section of trail that is popular among mountain bikers and hikers.

"Incidents reported on the double track from the hydro station on ski club road, sidewinder, and near the pipeline on the Laurentian Escarpment. Copper wire was strung across the trail at chest height.

"Please use extreme care when cycling to avoid being injured. Please continue to report this kind of behaviour to keep our community safe. If you are aware of the people responsible for this we encourage you to contact the police."

Police are investigating and ask anyone with information to contact them.
