The North Bay GUS Restoration U11 AA Trappers are Silver Stick Champions.
The young North Bay area squad beat the North Durham Warriors 2-1 in overtime to claim the title for the high profile event that wrapped on up Tuesday in Newmarket.
The Trappers went undefeated in round-robin play and dumped the hometown Newmarket Renegades 5-1 in the semi-final.
The regional Silver Stick qualifiers saw 26 U11AA teams compete from all over Ontario back in December of 2021. The Toronto Eagles, Mississauga Jets, North Durham Warriors and North Bay Trappers each won their regional tournaments and the Newmarket Renegades picked up the special invitational spot to advance to the International Silver Stick Finals held in Newmarket from March 12 to 15.
North Bay faced Newmarket twice in the tournament including the semi finals coming out with wins in both games. Trappers won 5-2 over the Mississauga Jets and tied the Toronto Eagles 4-4 on Sunday.
The Trappers faced off against the North Durham Warriors in the final on Tuesday, a team they played earlier in the tournament barely squeaking by with a 2-1 win.
The boys took the ice ready to play and the Trappers fans rallied behind them as their cheers and chants shook the Magna Center. North Durham knew how to keep the Trappers at bay, they were a hard team to play against, always taking the body and creating congestion in front of the net, Trappers, however, would out shoot them in the 1st and 2nd but both the Warriors goalie and Trapper’s goalie held each team in the game.
Going into the 3rd the score would remain 0-0. North Durham would score first but North Bay answered nearing the end of the third, 1-1. Coaches gathered their teams for a huddle as they headed into 3 on 3 for OT.
You could feel the nerves of the players who stepped onto the ice for the final minutes of play, but it was a shot from the blueline and an open top corner that would seal the fate for the Warriors. The Trappers scored, the fans exploded and the team brought home the coveted International Silver Stick pins in a 2-1 Overtime win over the North Durham Warriors.
The U11 AA Trappers send thanks to GUS Restoration for their sponsorship of the tournament fees!
