'If they are grocery shopping if they can, pick up an extra can or two of items, it all adds up'

The North Bay Salvation Army is looking for support this month as they are kicking off a "join the pac" campaign for February.

"Each week we will highlight on different items that are needed," said Major Stephanie Watkinson, corps officer, with the Salvation Army North Bay Ministries.

"We would like to encourage people that can join together with co-workers, friends, family to collect as much items as they can to help out our neighbours who are struggling with basic items."

Watkinson admits it's not easy, as like many not-for-profit organizations, fundraising was down as they came up short of their Christmas campaign goal.

"If we can increase our physical donations we can continue to meet the need as we continue to develop programs to break the reliance on the food bank by dealing with other issues," she explained.

"I don't think it is news to anybody that there is a rise in food insecurity, not only in our city but around the world.

"We just would like people to know that we accept physical donations because over the years we have not received many physical donations at the Salvation Army so just to educate them that there is a need and we need help from those able to help."

But the challenge is, they are not the only food bank looking for help.

"In North Bay, I think there are nine food banks and we are all trying to meet the need so we are all in competition with each other in a sense, but we are all trying to work together to help our community," she said.

"If they are grocery shopping if they can, pick up an extra can or two of items, it all adds up."
