Nipissing Rotary club arranged transportation and a tour of Nipissing University and Canadore College recently for 30 high school age international exchange students who are currently studying in North Bay and living with local host families.
The concept is to highlight what College and University education looks like in our part of Canada and introduce them to post-secondary prospects available in this area for future studies.
Rotarians rented the school bus on May 12 to pick up the students from local high schools and provide a day of discovery.
The tours and student contacts were also made possible through the support and partnerships with YES Canada and Muskoka Language International, two programs that have international secondary students doing extended homestays in North Bay.
"It was a terrific opportunity to not only help the students see what college and university life is like in our part of Canada but also introduce them to the extensive courses and programs that exist for them to stay for post-secondary education in North Bay," said Nipissing Rotarian Drew Mitchell.
It's hoped that this tour would showcase the college and university, the richness of our multicultural community and encourage the retention of young talent. While many students stated that they were undecided on their future education plans (at home or abroad) others indicated interests including medical, law and computers; programs offered locally and regionally.
Nipissing Club members Shona Camirand and President Mark Lamontagne, along with Rotarian spouse Judy Smith and MLI coordinator Andrea Corbeil, accompanied the students on the bus and tours.
