A mild December left many of North Bay’s outdoor rinks showing more gravel than snow and ice on them.
Unfortunately that meant no skating or hockey on outdoor rinks for kids during the Christmas holidays.
Now that winter has finally arrived, the city is working hard to get its outdoor rinks ready for action in 2016.
“The outdoor rinks are in the stage of packing and filling,” said Bryan Kimber, the City of North Bay’s Community Development Facilitator.
“Due to the warm weather leading up to the holiday season as much preparation was done as possible to get ready for the season.”
But the recent cold has allowed the outdoor rink work to start, and a target opening date has been set.
“Our rink caretakers are beginning to fill the rinks and groom them this week in hopes of having them up and operational by January 11th,” said Kimber.
The city will let users know as soon as the rinks are safe to use. However, they still encourage volunteers to step up and help maintain the city’s outdoor rinks.
“As always we are still looking for volunteers at our rinks to help with maintenance and supervision,” said Kimber.
Kimber suggests that anyone interested in becoming a rink volunteer should contact the City of North Bay Parks and Recreation and Leisure services department.
“For more information on becoming a rink volunteer please contact the City of North Bay so Parks Recreation and Leisure services department.”
