The North Bay Canoe Club sent 26 athletes to the Ontario Championship in Welland, Ontario on August 19 to 20.

It's been a good summer for the NBCC. Officials with the club say they have increased the number of athletes participating at the Championships along with the number of athletes and teams competing in “A” finals.

Highlights from Day 1 include Oscar Graves U16 K1, Haley Sebesta U16 C1, Abbey Krawczuk U18 K1 and the team of Nathaniel Suppa and Wes Clouthier U16 C2 having a top 10 finish.

The U16 Girls (Haley, Evelyn Ross, Nuala Clark, and Mylee Evans) and Boys (Nathaniel, Wes, Caleb Allingham, and Eddie Masse) teams each finished 3rd in the IC4 which is a new boat for the club.

Highlights from Day 2 included Haley Sebesta capturing the silver medal in the U14 C1 race and she teamed up with Mylee Evans to capture the silver medal in the U14 C2 race.

Just off the podium finishing 4th was Lily McClelland in the U12 K1, Nathaniel Suppa and Wes Clouthier in the U14 C2 and Nathaniel, Wes, Eddie Masse and Caleb Allingham in the U14 C4 race.  Honorable mention must be made to Eddie who had to compete in the C1 “C” final but had the second fastest time among all the U12 C1 paddlers at the Championship.  In the “B” finals, the Club captured four gold, four silver and three bronze medals.  In the Club points awards, the U14 Girls earned a 3rd place finish due to the combined results.

Haley, Mylee, Wes and Nathaniel are hoping their top 10 finish in the U14 C1 races will get them nominated for the U14 Academy Team with Canoe Kayak Ontario Sprint.

Up next for the NBCC is the Canoe Kayak Sprint Nationals in Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 29 to September 2.
