Updated: One helped from structure fire in second-floor unit on Main East

The victim's unit is heavily damaged and the adjoining units were also affected

Update from NBFES Monday at 10:45 a.m.

An update on the Sunday afternoon fire from Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders: "Crews from all three fire stations responded to the structure fire and were tasked with evacuating the adjoining units," to ensure the safety of the occupants. Meanwhile, the other crews "simultaneously attacked and very quickly  extinguished the fire."

The nature of the fire is under investigation by members of the North Bay Police Service.

NBFES thanks the District of Nipissing Paramedics who were on scene to care for people negatively impacted by the fire. Near North Victim Services is working with the tenants that were displaced by the fire.

Original Story from Sunday at 5:34 p.m.

One person avoided serious injuries after being helped from a second-floor apartment at 360 Main Street East.

North Bay Fire and Emergency Services responded to an emergency call just after 4 p.m., Sunday.

The occupant of the unit with the structure fire was treated for minor injuries and released as fire crews controlled the blaze.

The victim's unit is heavily damaged and the adjoining units were also affected, although there was a chance the other apartments on that floor would still be habitable, according to NBFES.

Gas and utilities were shut off for safety and to allow for further investigation, in an attempt to determine the cause of the fire and estimate the damage.

BayToday will update as more information becomes available.
