At 6 foot and 170 pounds, Cayden Kowal is a playmaking forward on the North Bay U16 AAA Trappers.

The big Trappers forward is not afraid to go to the net as he has netted 5 goals and 6 assists for 11 points in 17 games so far this year in the Under-18 Great North Midget League.

"I think I’m a very mind-opening player like I think of my teammates first and I'm a pass-first player in the neutral zone and in the offensive zone," noted Kowal.

The grade 10 St. Joseph-Scollard Hall student also takes pride in his work along the boards.

"I love to play in the corner that's where I’m mostly at in the game I love to get the pucks and give it to the guy in front of the net and always give them opportunities to score."

Kowal continues to get better as he continues to grow as an athlete.

"Of course, since I have been getting bigger the confidence in me has grown so I've been able to like do stuff I wasn't able to a year ago like drive it or be the bigger man on the ice and I really notice that," he said.

Kowal is also a multi-sport athlete able to excel on the basketball court and on the football turf.

"I'm always running, I'm always working out and that really transfers on the ice. People can tell I have team spirit which I always take to the dressing room and use it with the boys," said Kowal.

Kowal hopes all his hard work pays off in time for the 2022 OHL Priority Selection.

"I would probably say that I'm a different type of player like if you look at me at first, I'm not the type of player that you notice but if you really look at me, I always look for my teammates and I'm a very mind-opening player," he added.

Some OHL scouts are taking notice of Kowal's play; especially after the recent COVID-19 lockdown.

"Kowal is a good size player who has found his rhythm in the later stages of the season," said one OHL scout.

"Cayden plays the game with good pace and has the ability to generate offence by the use of either a quality pass or showcasing a good release on a effective  shot. Kowal is part of an exciting young group with the U16 Trappers team who has been an absolute pleasure to watch this year in the Great North Midget League.

"This is a team that should be seen as serious contenders down the stretch and one that  I expect will have a few names called at the 2022 OHL draft."
