Kiwanis Club of Nipissing Race Director Nancy Birch says she expects a healthy turnout, with hundreds of competitors, volunteers and spectators gathering for the Annual North Bay Triathlon Weekend.

Environment Canada is calling for sunny skies Saturday morning and early in the afternoon, then a mix of sun and cloud with 40 per cent chance of showers late in the afternoon. Sunday will be sunny with a high of 27.

Birtch is pleased to see so many entries to date and expects a few more registrants to sign-up tonight and tomorrow given the expected weekend weather forecasts.

A flurry of activity will occur in and around Trout Lake, in the surrounding neighbourhoods and along Highway 63.

You can still register at the North Bay Canoe Club on Lakeside Drive Friday evening between 5-7 p.m.

The children's Triathlon will be held on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. with four different age categories between 6-15 years. The Kids Tri is to introduce kids and families to the sport of triathlon.

Sunday will see the "Try a Tri" start at 8 a.m. That event is specifically intended to allow new or less experienced participants to experience the elements and sport of triathlon at an appropriate level. The North Bay Try-a-Tri involves a 300 metre swim, a 10 km bike, and a 2 km run. While the event is timed, it is not intended to be competitive.

It's followed by all of the adult competitors involved with individual men and women categories, relay teams and the popular Duathlon (run-bike-run) events.

This unique, technical event is halfway between a sprint and Olympic distance duathlon triathlon. It is designed to take advantage of the best of the natural features of North Bay, a short run in the Birchhaven neighbourhood, then joining up with the Adult Triathlon onto the challenging North Shore Road route and finishing with a very scenic and shaded run.

Sunday is a sanctioned Triathlon Ontario event.

A reminder to motorists to consider the athletes as they engage in this annual competition.  As a safety precaution, OPP and City Police will be along the race course and temporary road closures will be in effect on Saturday and Sunday.
