North Bay rolls out the welcome mat for newcomers

'As we continue to grow and diversify our population, it is important for us to celebrate, welcome, and meet with newcomers to support their integration into our community'

Vendors lined the hallways at North Bay’s Memorial Gardens on Saturday as newcomers and residents learned more about what there is to see and do in the city as they settle into the community.

The second annual Welcome to North Bay event offered information ranging from municipal services to educational programs, social clubs, sports and recreation, as well as religious, cultural, and volunteer organizations.

The North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce recognizes the importance of co-hosting this event.

“It is also an opportunity for people who have lived here for a long period, to come and network and connect with people and see what is going on,” explained Chamber President and CEO Donna Backer.

In its inaugural year, 45 vendors registered for the event.

Now in its send year, the number of vendors has shot up to 68.

“So, we’ve seen a huge increase, and it is interesting because a lot of the vendors last year were saying it was an amazing opportunity for them to network because there are new people coming through,” noted Backer.

Julie Van Berkel, who works with the North Bay and Area Local Immigration Partnership liked the concept of having so much available under one roof.

“The event helps to showcase the community as a whole. There are so many different opportunities to get involved in the community, but sometimes it is hard to know where to go. This brings everybody together in one space to share different opportunities,” stated Van Berkel. “There are so many opportunities for adults and children to get involved in the community, and this is a way for us to open the doors and create a welcoming environment.”

Van Berkel also noted that North Bay is experiencing a large influx of newcomers.

“North Bay has really been growing with our newcomer and immigrant populations. We’ve seen an increase in international students and express entry individuals, all here to find new opportunities and create a community here in North Bay.”

The event coincides with the Welcoming Week 2024 initiative which runs September 13-22.

In his address to the crowd, Mayor Peter Chirico stated, “As part of the global Welcoming Week initiative, this event is an opportunity to celebrate diverse cultures, traditions, and perspectives that enrich our community.”

Chirico went on to say, “As we continue to grow and diversify our population, it is important for us to celebrate, welcome and meet with newcomers to support their integration into our community.”
