Nipissing First Nation elects new Chief PHOTOS

Marianna Couchie has been elected as the new Chief of Nipissing First Nation. Couchie, who previously served as Deputy Chief, earned 274 of the 648 votes, with Scott McLeod in second place with 236 votes.

Couchie, who previously served as Deputy Chief, earned 274 of the 648 votes, with Scott McLeod in second place with 236 votes. Margaret Penasse Mayer earned 123 votes, while Gilbert Anishnabie earned 15.

Nipissing Chief Phil Goulais did not seek reelection. Goulais served as Chief of Nipissing First Nation from the late 1970’s to the early 1990’s. He returned to serve as Chief in 2003.

Incumbent councilors Rick Stevens, Mike Restoule, and Doug Chevrier all held onto their seats. Joining the council is Meriza (McLeod) George, Perry McLeod Shabogesic, Darrell McLeod, and June M. Commanda.

Coun. Pat Campeau did not seek reelection. The seventh council seat was left vacant after Ralph Beaucage passed away in late 2005.
