New wildfire in North Bay district confirmed

There have been eight new wildland fires confirmed in Ontario's northeast fire region since Tuesday night, according to Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) – including one in the North Bay district.

North Bay 22 (NOR022) is a 2-hectare fire that is not yet under control. The fire is north of Scarecrow Lake, about 80 km southwest of Temiskaming Shores.

Two Twin Otters, one heavy waterbomber and a lead birddog aircraft provided aerial fire suppression support to two FireRanger crews on the ground, the AFFES said.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's firefighting divisions say there are extreme fire hazard areas east of Greater Sudbury and around Kapuskasing.

AFFES said the fire hazard is otherwise high across much of the northeast region, with some areas showing a moderate hazard. Areas east of James Bay are seeing a moderate to low fire hazard.

The following are the other fires confirmed since Tuesday night:

  • Sudbury 42 (SUD042) is a 2.2-hectare fire that is not yet under control. This fire is within Spanish River Provincial Park, about 23 km northwest of Windy Lake. One Fire Ranger crew is committed to this fire.
  • Sudbury 43 (SUD043) is a 2.1-hectare wildland fire that is not yet under control. This fire is between Whitson Lake and Garson lake, 2 km southeast of the corner of Main Street and Kalmo Road. A CL-415 (waterbomber) and helicopter providing aerial fire suppression support to FireRangers on the ground.
  • Sudbury 44 (SUD044) is a 5-hectare wildland fire that is not yet under control. It is east of Barlow Lake, about 8.5 km west of Municipal Road 535. Three Twin Otters, one CL-415, and one birddog aircraft are performing aerial fire suppression to support FireRangers on the ground.
  • Sudbury 45 (SUD045) is a 0.3-hectare wildland fire that is not yet under control. It is east of Lake Panache, about 18 km east of Espanola. One FireRanger crew is committed to this fire.
  • Timmins 19 (TIM019) is a 0.3 hectare wildland fire that is not yet under control. This fire is along Highway 101, about 16 km southeast of Foleyet.
  • Parry Sound 8 (PAR008) was a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that is now out. This fire was southeast of Kawawaymog Lake, about 17 km northeast of South River.
  • Hearst 17 (HEA017) is a 2 hectare wildland fire that is not yet under control. This fire is north of Bannerman Lake,  34.5 km north of Hearst. Currently, 1 FireRanger crew and a helicopter are committed to this fire.

At the time of its Wednesday update, there were 21 active wildland fires in the northeast region. Of these, eight were not under control, two were being held, three were under control and eight were being observed.
