New radar speed sign in Burk's Falls working because 'we see the red brake lights go on'

'It’s important to alert people that they have to slow down” as they approach the school'

The Village of Burk’s Falls has installed a radar speed sign located on Ontario Street, right at the entrance to Land of Lakes Public School.

As the main thoroughfare through the community, Ontario Street sees a lot of traffic and Mayor Chris Hope says a lot of that traffic turns into the school parking lot. The school is situated at the bottom of a small hill on Ontario Street.

The maximum speed limit decreases from 60 to 40 km/h near the school.

Hope says “It’s important to alert people that they have to slow down” as they approach the school, adding the radar speed sign will stay up permanently.

Hope says residents have sent messages to town hall thanking the municipality for putting up the device which displays a motorist’s speed and cautions approaching vehicles to slow down if they are slightly over the speed limit.

It also warns motorists with a red “Too Fast” light when they are well above the speed limit.

Hope says the municipality knows the sign is working because “We see the red brake lights go on."
