Jennifer McCourt from Discovery Routes outlines new tourism incentives for mountain bike enthusiasts.

A group of local organizations are teaming up to try and promote mountain biking in the North Bay area.

Tourism North Bay, Discovery Routes, and the North Bay Mountain Bike Association (NBMBA) launched the 'Mountain Bike Our Way in North Bay' program on the government dock by the Chief Commanda II cruise ship on Wednesday evening.

"From our perspective, we really value the work done by our volunteers," said Jennifer McCourt, the director for Discovery Routes.

"So many of those trails are managed and maintained by volunteers and if we didn't have the volunteers we would not have the trail network we have. We know we have a gem here that will attract our own people who use the trails, so we want to bring more people to experience those trails," she added.

"This new program helps to bring resources to those volunteers from the North Bay Mountain Bike Association who are building the network of trails specifically for mountain biking."

Tanya Bédard, Executive Director of Tourism North Bay believes the project has got the wheels to grow.

“Visitors can book a stay-and-play package at participating bicycle-friendly accommodations and enjoy exclusive deals from local merchants, safe bike storage, and a welcoming cycling community. This initiative highlights North Bay's commitment to outdoor tourism and active living, promoting the region as a premier mountain biking destination,” she said.

"So this program not only connects these visitors to our accommodation options, especially in the June to November months, it also connects them to the trail network and to the local businesses who are supporting the cycling community."

The "MTB Our Way in North Bay" package offers a variety of perks including:

  • A free NBMBA Bike Tag that unlocks discounts at local businesses.
  • An information package with trail maps, ride schedules, and local resources.
  • Specialty offers at participating bicycle-friendly accommodations.
  • A visitor membership fee contribution to the NBMBA for every package sold, supporting local trail maintenance and development.

Connie Hergott, program director with the North Bay Mountain Bike Association feels North Bay's landscape offers ideal riding conditions.

“The North Bay Mountain Bike Association continues to leverage this landscape by building trails in partnership with the MNRF, private landowners and the City of North Bay," stated Hergott.

"We have been building MORE than trails.  We have been building a community and culture that supports and advocates for access to mountain biking experiences, safe and responsible trail building, and events for all ages and abilities to enjoy the sport."
