NBPS: Attempted murder plus 18 charges laid against Brampton man

The North Bay Police Service reports a 20-year-old Brampton man is facing 19 criminal charges, including attempted murder, after an NBPS officer sought to arrest him for possession of a stolen vehicle on Friday, May 31.

On Friday, May 3, at around 11:30 a.m., a North Bay Police Service Officer was on general patrol in the Wyld Street area when the Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system in his cruiser activated, indicating a stolen vehicle was approaching. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled the area.

Another officer located the same vehicle in a parking lot on Memorial Drive and approached the driver. After a short exchange, in which police say the driver provided false identification, the driver put the vehicle in motion and struck the officer, pinning him between the accused’s vehicle and another vehicle. The officer ended up on the ground and the accused then drove toward the officer, who was able to escape. The accused then struck a police cruiser and another vehicle several times before driving away at a high rate of speed. Another arriving officer’s cruiser was struck, and that officer pursued the accused for a short distance down Memorial Drive before the pursuit was terminated for public safety reasons.

Multiple witnesses called 911 as the accused drove dangerously throughout the city.

Witnesses contacted NBPS and the vehicle was later located on Macbeth Crescent. After a short foot pursuit, the accused was arrested. Police found the accused to be impaired by drugs and he was transported to North Bay Police Service headquarters, where he was positively identified through fingerprints. A small quantity of illegal drugs was found as a result of police searches.

The injured officer was transported to the hospital and was later released. He is now recovering from minor injuries.

The accused in this matter is Sahibjot Singh, age 20, of Brampton, Ont., who is charged with:

• One count of attempted murder
• One count of dangerous operation cause bodily harm
• One count of assault peace officer with a weapon
• One count of fail to stop at an accident causing bodily harm
• Two counts of fail to stop at an accident
• One count of flight from police
• One count of mischief over $5000
• Two counts of mischief under $5000
• One count of personation with intent
• One count of possession of property obtained by crime
• One count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
• One count of impaired operation by drug
• Three counts of possession of a schedule 1 substance
• One count of obstruct police
• One count of breach of a release order

At the time of the incident, the accused was on a release order from Brampton for several offences, including flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime Over $5000 and mischief Over $5000.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
