Most local snowmobile trails closed

''Conditions have deteriorated very quickly and safe riding is no longer feasible'

The short snowmobile season is closing quicker than many sled enthusiasts had hoped.

Today, the North Bay Snowmobile Club annnounced that their trails are closing due to the mild weather conditions that past two days.

"After a short 6 weeks of riding (because of trail closures by the Health Unit) and due to the recent rain and warm weather,  nearly all trails in northeastern Ontario are now closed for safety reasons," stated Shawn Flindall, Director of Public Relations and Marketing with the North Bay Snowmobile Club.

OFSC Snowmobile trails in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit region only re-opened to the public on February 22.

Back in mid-January, the Health Unit locked down all area OFSC snowmobile trails as a means to curb the spread of COVID-19 and help discourage visitors from other regions coming to the area to access the well-maintained trails.

Organizations that have closed their trails include the North Bay Club, South Shore Club, West Nipissing, Marten River, Tri-Towns, Kirkland Lake, Sudbury, and a majority of other trails to the south of us.

"We urge riders to check the online trail maps and to not ride on any closed trails," noted Flindall.

"Conditions have deteriorated very quickly and safe riding is no longer feasible."
