On Wednesday, VON Meals on Wheels celebrated “Mayor for Meals” day.

Mayor Al McDonald joined staff at Cassellholme Home for the Aged meeting with the volunteers to help sort meals before visiting some clients.

Access to nutritious meals is an essential part of aging comfortably at home.

With age-related impairments, cooking and grocery shopping are often among the first pieces of independence to be lost.

Poor nutrition only exacerbates the issue.

For example,  a new widower finds himself preparing meals for the first time, eating nothing but buttered bread and salty, high fat ready to eat food.   He would definitely benefit from a friendly volunteer bringing him a hot, nutritious meal up to five days a week with a batch of healthy frozen meals for the weekend.

In addition to nutrition, isolation equates to vulnerability.

In many instances, VON Meals on Wheels volunteers are the only visitors to client’s homes and are the first to identify emerging issues or dangerous situations.
