The in-custody death in Chelmsford on Tuesday happened after police used a conducted energy weapon.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) made this revelation in a media release issued today.
The release includes preliminary details of their investigation, which reveals:
- Police received a domestic disturbance-related call at a residence on Keith Avenue in Chelmsford at approximately 10:50 a.m.
- Police located a man, and used a conducted energy weapon during his arrest. The man then went into cardiac arrest.
- Officers provided emergency care and called paramedics.
- The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case, and a post-mortem is scheduled for Thursday morning.
In Tuesday's media release by Greater Sudbury Police Service, it was noted officers “made entry” into the residence upon arrival “to ensure the safety of those involved.”
“Upon affecting the arrest, the individual became unresponsive, and officers began life-saving measures with the assistance of City of Greater Sudbury Paramedics,” GSPS said in their news release. “Unfortunately, the individual was pronounced deceased on scene.”
Sudbury.com visited the scene in the late afternoon and found a duplex taped off by police and two police vehicles parked outside. The area resident who phoned 911 said he did so after hearing loud noises in the home.
The SIU’s investigation is ongoing.
