The Ontario Provincial Police is mourning the death of a member of the Haldimand County Detachment, killed in the line of duty.

On December 27, shortly after 2:30 p.m., an officer had been responding to a vehicle in the ditch at the intersection of Indian Line and Concession 14, west of Hagersville, a town south of Hamilton.

When the officer arrived, he was shot.

Provincial Constable Grzegorz Pierzchala was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Constable Pierzchala was 28 years old and had been an OPP officer for just over a year.

Two individuals, a man and a woman, were seen fleeing from the scene and were believed to be armed.

Earlier reports said police were searching for 25-year-old Randall McKenzie in a 2021 black Chevrolet pickup truck.

Following a major search of the area, two people have been taken into custody.

"No further details will be released at this time regarding the suspects," says an OPP release.
