(UPDATED) Major house fire in downtown north bay

One person rescued from the flaming building

McIntyre Street East at John Street was closed to traffic this early morning due to a structure fire in the 500 block of McIntyre Street East this morning.

The call initially came in around 6:30 a.m. about the blaze at the three-story multi-residence home at 573 McIntyre St E.

Deputy Chief Greg Saunders told BayToday that one male tenant was rescued from inside the flaming building and suffered serious injuries.

"The fire was on the main floor of the unit and when we arrived on scene we were told that there was somebody inside so our priority at that time is a rescue, so we went in and were able to find the victim and get that person to safety but that person had suffered some serious injuries from the fire," said Saunders.

Saunders says they do not know the status of the injured male tenant at this time. He says the firefighters did a great job containing the fire damage to only one unit. However, smoke damage is throughout the entire building.

"Once we were able to affect the rescue and once that was complete we were able to knock down the fire fairly quickly," said Saunders.

"To affect a rescue and then be able to knock down the fire, the guys did a really good job," said Saunders, who noted the age of the building created pre-building code challenges.

The Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate the cause.

Victims Services has been called to assist the three other tenants of the building who are without a home for now.

Saunders credits paramedics for their assistance as well.

North Bay Transit also provided a bus where cold tenants and firefighters could go in and warm up from the bone-chilling February morning cold.
