North Bay city council will be considering diverting part of property tax bills toward paying for the rail lands purchase.

Following Thursday night's budget meeting deputy mayor Peter Chirico told council it could be time to consider a levy like that.

"That $12.5 million purchase of the waterfront takes $1.6 million out of our operating budget each and every year for the next 20 years, and that is the key to all of this," Chirico said.

Mayor Vic Fedeli said the levy would not be slapped on top of tax bills, but taken out of them.

"Whatever the amount the levy is, then the tax bill would be reduced that much."
