Chris Mayne, owner of Mayne Travel, knows that many local residents typically pack their bags and head to somewhere sunny on March break.
That is no different in 2025. However, Mayne says it's no coincidence that trips to the U.S. for vacations have dropped off amidst the economic uncertainty revolving around tariffs.
"We have had some persons who have cancelled travel to the U.S. and rebooked to non U.S. destinations, even taking a small cancellation penalty," noted Mayne.
However, that's not everybody.
"I would say most people with non-refundable tickets or significant change fees involved are still travelling as planned to Florida, Vegas, California and even Hawaii," he said.
Travel agency Flight Centre Travel Group Canada says leisure bookings to American cities dropped 40 per cent in February from the same month in 2024. One in five customers cancelled their trips to the U.S. over the past three months.
"I think many are reluctant to travel to the U.S. given the current political climate and we are seeing overall reductions in the number of people travelling to the U.S.," noted Mayne.

Air Canada announced last month it would reduce flights by 10 per cent to Florida, Las Vegas and Arizona starting in March — usually go-to hot spots during spring break season.
"This has probably been one of the quietest March Breaks to Florida that I can recall," concluded Mayne.
