Plan to bundle up tomorrow if you take part in the local Women's March.
"Many people wore pussy hats at the first march at Washington as a statement against Trump’s vulgar comments that he would 'grab [a woman] by the pussy.'" said Mary White, Public Educator for Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre of Nipissing.
"This year we have encouraged folks to wear the symbols that speak to their truth. We hope to see pussy hats, red scarves, pride flags, and red umbrellas. In specific, the National Women’s Association of Canada has encouraged folks to wear red scarves to help raise awareness regarding the disproportionate violence against Indigenous women and girls in Canada."
Marchers will be gathering at the Centre at 11 a.m.
The first March took place as a worldwide protest on January 21, 2017, the day after the inauguration of Donald Trump.
"The global theme for this year’s march is #womenswave," explains White. "We will be leaving Amelia Rising at approximately 12 p.m.. to march down Main St. after an opening ceremony where we will acknowledge the land and our relations as Treaty People and speak to our ongoing need to reconcile from the ongoing impacts of colonization of our Indigenous peoples. We have three main speakers. After our March we will warm up with coffee, tea, and food and hear from our Keynote speaker, Donna McCloud."
Organizers hope to raise awareness about women’s issues locally, especially sexual and gender-based violence.
"All of the organizing was done with a group of local activists. The Women’s March Canada organization now has a local North Bay chapter and we hope to have more events throughout the year and make 2020 the biggest March yet," added White.
