A well-known local company will have its powerful locomotives put to good use in a Japanese steel plant.

Schalke Locomotives, which is owned by North Bay's Nordic Minesteel Technologies based here in North Bay, has inked a deal for the purchase of a 140 tonne locomotive by a company in Tokyo.

The purchase of a second locomotive is planned for this year.

Delivery of the first one is scheduled for 2021.

"This large locomotive will be used in a Japanese steel plant and will pull trains with weights up to 1.400t," a release stated.

"It will be Schalke’s heaviest four-axle loco, 10t heavier than the 130t locomotives supplied to CODELCO in Chile."

They also say the diesel-electric locomotive will be equipped with all Schalke typical features like electro-dynamic braking up to a standstill.

A further special requirement of this vehicle is the narrow gauge of 1.067mm.
