Local card shop closing after 17 years

It's the last Carlton Card shop in northern Ontario and has been here for the past 17 years

A longtime North Bay Mall store, Carlton Cards is closing at the end of this month.

It's the last Carlton Card shop in northern Ontario and has been here for the past 17 years.

All prices have been slashed and a sign on the door indicates it is closing.

It comes on the heels of another store leaving the mall. Urban Planet closed this past weekend after just over a year of operation.

On its website, Carlton Cards claims it is Canada’s #1 greeting card company, employing 1,300 people across Canada.

It started in 1920 on Spadina Ave. in Toronto but is now a subsidiary of American Greetings Corporation located in Cleveland, Ohio.

A call to the company by BayToday was not returned, but the website contains some interesting information.

  • 70% of all card purchases are made by women

  • Carlton Cards markets to Canada's leading retailers. It is the leading supplier to most of the major industry distribution channels, including drug stores, mass retailers, specialty stores, grocery chains, and dollar stores

  • More than 600 million greetings cards are exchanged in Canada annually

  • The most popular card-sending holidays are, in order, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day and Easter

The North Bay Mall has been serving North Bay residents since 1976.
