A former North Bay resident is trying to make the climb up the Amazon book ladder with the launch of his new novel, “Outsider Cops - The Caribbean Case.”

Gary Shaw, whose father J.L. Shaw, was the mayor of North Bay in the mid-1940’s, moved away from North Bay in the 1960’s.

Shaw had moved to the Cayman Islands where he was a landlord and a restaurant owner.  And during that decade living on an island in the West Caribbean, he got his inspiration for this crime novel.

In fact, Shaw became the landlord of a pair of high profile Scotland Yard detectives along with some American drug enforcement officers.

“They (Scotland Yard Detectives) were sent to the area to solve murders and it never crossed my mind at the time that the police department had a reason not to solve them because there was some drug stuff going on,” said Shaw in an interview with BayToday.ca earlier this summer.

“The next thing I know there are three drug enforcement guys from the USA that show up and I am their landlord so I got to be friends with all these people.”

The Caribbean Case features two detectives, Curtis Cole and his partner William Strong as they solve eight suspicious deaths along with working side by side with U.S. Drug Enforcement Agents to take down an international drug cartel.

The 332-page novel is available on Amazon and has cracked the top 100 in the Crime Genre earlier this summer.

“When I finished writing it, I thought this is like watching a movie,” said Shaw.

“I’ve got the coast guard in there, I’ve got women in there, I’ve got the British Navy, I’ve got female detectives, drug lords, people getting shot, it is a heck of a story.”

Shaw says this crime novel has inspired him and now he is in the process of writing another book, but this one with a Canadian based story.
