Tori Hamilton says her and husband Thomas Hamilton really did not put a lot of thought into getting married on a leap year day.

However, when the first leap year on a Saturday in February popped up, the Hamilton's figured it was the right day to tie the knot.

"We always wanted to get married in February and we were looking at the calendar and noticed that there was a leap year and it was also on a Saturday which usually people get married on a Saturday so we thought it would be pretty perfect," said Tori about the date.

The couple celebrated their marriage at the Ramada Pinewood presided by officiant Jasen Belanger from Eternal Celebrations Church of Christ.

Saturday leap days occur just once every 28 years, making them a rare candidate for most weddings, along with the fact that it is also a winter wedding which is the least popular season for weddings.

"We are pretty unique people so everything we do people say, 'you are doing it that way,' so obviously we wanted to do something unique," said Tori.

Tori says they do not believe in any old wives tales about whether it is good or bad luck to get married on a leap year day.

The young newlyweds have two young children so they hope to have their honeymoon next year.

But what will the plan be for their first February 29 anniversary in four years?

"We will probably do something as it will be our first real anniversary, even though it is four years away from now.," said Tori.

"I would imagine we would probably take a trip or something along those lines together. Maybe we will build a house, we really don't know where our future will take us."

According to Timeanddate.com, Leap years are years where an extra, or intercalary, day is added to the end of the shortest month, February. The intercalary day, February 29, is commonly referred to as leap day. Leap years have 366 days instead of the usual 365 days and occur almost every four years.
