Lakeshore weapons incident brings out the SWAT team

Police say the incident followed a tip that a man had threatened victims with a handgun

Editor's note: NBPS issued a news release Friday indicating that it was a weapons investigation, not drugs as previously reported.

There was a heavy police presence on Lakeshore Drive, across from Nipissing Plaza yesterday afternoon as a search warrant was executed at the former Dunrovin Motel. Police had been alerted to a weapons offence.

A resident of the building told BayToday she believed it was a drug bust. Police arrived around 3 p.m. The resident says drugs have been a longstanding problem.

"As far as I know, it's been going on for quite a while, ever since we moved in about a year ago. We were informed of it when we first moved in. We've made complaints about it to our property manager. People are constantly in and out of there that are clearly intoxicated on some sort of drug,"

She says police had visited the building "a couple of times and spoken to him but nothings ever come of it. We've just seen them here in the unit, and then they leave. Definitely nothing of this size."

About a dozen officers were on scene carrying heavy weapons, along with an ambulance.

A second witness told BayToday that a police truck took one man down and away, and a woman was taken from the room in handcuffs.

BayToday will update our coverage as details are made available. Police were still on the scene at 7:30 p.m. however the event seemed to be winding down.
