As temperatures start to fall and winter approaches, United Way North East Ontario gears up to ensure that older adults in our community stay warm and comfortable.

Referrals for the Keeping Seniors Warm program are now being accepted until October 14 through an online referral process at UWCNEO.com.

“I am so appreciative. It helps me a lot. I don’t have to come up with 200 bucks to buy my winter wear. I never even knew there was this organization until I got the paperwork. I was surprised,” said Pierre Seguin of North Bay who last year listed the items he needed. “I’m looking for a winter coat, long johns, socks, toque, and mitts, the necessities."

Keeping Seniors Warm supports those aged 55 and older in vulnerable living situations within the North Bay, Sudbury, Espanola, and Timmins regions. The program provides these individuals with essential winter gear to help them endure the cold months with dignity and in comfort.

"Thanks to the generosity of our donors, eligible participants will have the opportunity to attend a special shopping event. Each participant will be paired with a volunteer to shop for items such as winter coats, boots, socks, mittens, and other warm items," says a news release.

Eligibility Criteria:

- Must be 55 or older.

- Low-income seniors must be referred by a community agency and live in North Bay., Sudbury, Espanola, or Timmins

- Participants who have utilized the program within the last two years are not eligible.\

“We understand the unique challenges that come with aging, and it’s our goal to make sure that our older adult community members can be warm and safe this winter,” said Mary Lou Hussak, Executive Director of United Way. “With the support of our donors, volunteers and local businesses, we’re excited to offer this vital service once again.”
