More than 300 runners braved the heat and ran the 2nd Annual North Bay Road Race which took place on Saturday, Sept. 14.

This year the half-marathon distance was added, the first North Bay has seen since 2017 which was warmly welcomed with more than 80 runners participating.

With over double the amount of participants this year compared to the last, the North Bay Road Race is becoming a staple in the Northern Ontario running scene.

“Colin and I just want to bring quality racing to Northern Ontario. It’s great to have events that people in Northern Ontario don’t have to travel far for and a race that brings people to the North from all over Ontario," said Tyler Ashurst, co-race director.

Since its inception the North Bay Road Race and the Look Out trail race (also hosted by the group) have been well received by the community.

“We are so grateful to have an outpouring of support from the community and to have numerous sponsors that have stepped up to make our visions a reality.”

This year the race supported the YMCA Fill the Bus Campaign, where it raised over $3,600. The Fill the Bus Campaign helps to ensure kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to go to camp with the opportunity to.

Second-time overall 5 km winner Nico Pederson, who won in a time of 15:57, was impressed with his performance and the event itself.

“While the North Bay Road Race is only on its second year, it is amongst the best races in Canada in terms of quality," he said.

"The course is super precise and well marked, the registration is easy, the sponsors and people are wonderful. The whole experience is seamless and a joy to be a part of."
