Kabuki House demolished

The fire left no damage to any neighbouring buildings but the blaze completely destroyed the roof of the restaurant, leaving the building an icy ruin

Main St. W. between Cassells and Foren St. was closed off today as work crews demolished what was left of the popular restaurant The Kabuki House.

The structure was hit by fire March 20th.

The well known Japanese restaurant on Main Street West opened in the late 1980’s.

The owners were on-site this afternoon to watch, and during what was an emotional moment for them, declined to say what the future holds.

The night of the fire, Fire Chief Jason Whiteley said the original call came from the police as a burglar alarm.

"Fire crews encountered heavy fire and smoke on the first floor and basement forcing crews out of the house that were attempting an interior fire attack and search and rescue," said Whiteley‎.

"Tactics were changed and a second attempt for an interior attack and search was conducted but crews eventually were forced to fight the fire from the exterior as conditions inside rapidly changed and deteriorated."

The fire left no damage to any neighbouring buildings but the blaze completely destroyed the roof of the restaurant, leaving the building an icy ruin.

Canor Construction is doing the demolition and transit buses are being detoured.

The street is expected to be re-opened by 8 p.m.
