Ice tsunami on shoreline a popular waterfront attraction

The ice ridge won't be disappearing any time soon with cool daytime temps and below freezing lows overnight for at least the next week

Despite calls from health officials to limit non-essential travel, there were plenty of people who couldn't resist heading out this afternoon to the waterfront where the attraction is a large ice tsunami that has formed.

The huge buildup was caused by yesterday's high winds and deteriorating ice conditions. 

The ice can be a powerful force destroying docks, decks and property. We noticed several memorial benches in danger of destruction at Sunset Park and alerted the city.
