Hundreds remember before Callander’s Peace Park

‘I look forward to this,’ Legion branch president said, ‘to celebrate the veterans who gave all’

A light rain misted over hundreds of people who gathered before Callander’s Peace Park to honour our veterans.

Members of Legion Branch 445 led the march just before 11 a.m., cresting the hill on Lansdowne Street en route to the cenotaph. Police officers, soldiers, veterans, and children from the local school followed the pipes to the park, where about 50 wreaths waited to be placed before the cenotaph.

The morning was grey and solemn as the Legion’s Sargeant at Arms began his roll call for Callander’s fallen soldiers. After 29 names were called, in a voice loud enough for all to hear, even those standing on the other side of the street, the Sargeant at Arms said, “there is no answer.”

Lest we forget.

“In Callander we always have a really good turn out,” noted Legion Branch 445 President Richard Rhindress. “I look forward to this,” he said of the ceremony, “to celebrate the veterans who gave all.”
