Greening Nipissing, in partnership with the City of North Bay, held a guided tour of the North Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant on Tuesday, July 9th, 2013 at 12:00pm noon for the general public. The event, which was held at the wastewater facility on Memorial Drive, North Bay, helped the public learn about the treatment cycle of wastewater and sewage.

During the tour, adults and children were guided by city staff who highlighted important processes from raw sewage pumping to sewage grinding and chlorination. Effluent water is de-chlorinated at the end of the process before being discharged into Lake Nipissing. Dewatered sludge at the end of the process is trucked to the Merrick Landfill Site as topping material.

“The North Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant tour was a great opportunity for the public to learn about this important process,” said Vijanti Ramlogan Murphy, Executive Director of Greening Nipissing. “As a registered charity, we are excited about our partnerships that help strengthen our educational mandate.”

North Bay’s Wastewater Treatment Plant was originally built in the early 1960s and has seen various expansions since that time. The plant has a current capacity to process approximately 54,500 cubic meters of raw sewage matter per day.
