The North Bay Gathering Place is announcing a return of evening meal service, available once a week.
Back in September of 2024, the organization decided to cut staff and decrease their meals to five meals a week, one a day, and lunch only.
"In our mission, we wanted to ensure no one in North Bay goes hungry," a release stated.
Peter Gregory, Gathering Place board chair believes the addition further strengthens their role in supporting the community’s most vulnerable individuals. However, he wants to remind the public, that the Gathering Place does more than just feed the homeless.
Gregory says the Gathering Place serves a diverse group of people, including those with disability, seniors, veterans, families, youth, and anyone in need.
"More than just a meal program, it is a warm, welcoming space where individuals can find companionship and socialization. In addition to providing meals, The Gathering Place works diligently to combat food waste," noted Gregory.
Last year, 225,000 pounds of surplus food were rescued and redirected to local partners, diverting it from landfills and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“We invite everyone to visit and see the incredible work being done here firsthand," he added.
Gregory says this rescued food enables them to be a food distribution hub for the community. "Every day, we send hundreds of pounds of food out to neighboring agencies, group homes, shelters, church food banks, and student food banks," added Gregory.
“We are committed to serving our community with dignity and respect in a safe, friendly environment."
Coldest Night of the Year approaching
The Coldest Night of the Year has become a major fundraising event for the organization and that is no different in 2025.
"We are excited to share that 153 walkers have already signed up for the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) event, showing their unwavering support for The Gathering Place," said Gregory.
The event takes place on Saturday, February 22.
"The Coldest Night of the Year is a national initiative where communities come together to raise funds and awareness for local charities. By participating, we are helping to change lives and address hunger in our community."
Gregory says it’s not too late to get involved.
"You can still support The Gathering Place by making a donation or signing up to walk."
