Gateway takes over slots at Sudbury Downs, casino operations in the North

Corporation signs 20-year operating deal with OLG

Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Ltd is now officially the operator of casinos in Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie and the Slots at Sudbury Downs.

The announcement was made today, the same day Gateway takes over day-to-day operations at the attractions, purchasing the business and assets of the North Gaming Bundle.

Gateway operates 26 gaming facilities (climbing to 28 with the North Bundle) and employs more than 6,100 people across Canada.

The company said in a news release it plans to invest more than $100 million “to revitalize and enhance the gaming and entertainment landscape in the North.” Gateway said it is spending more than $300 million on its north and southwest Ontario gaming bundles.

Tapped in December by OLG to head up those bundles, the North Gaming Bundle includes casinos in Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie, slots in Sudbury (at Sudbury Downs) and two planned casino builds in Kenora and North Bay.

The Southwest Gaming Bundle includes a casino in Point Edward and slots in Woodstock (at Woodstock Raceway), London (at the Western Fair District), Clinton (at Clinton Raceway), Dresden (at Dresden Raceway) and Hanover (at Hanover Raceway).
