Gateway of the North arch now a heritage site

On Thursday, September 9th at 10AM the Municipal Heritage Committee and the City of North Bay will unveil a Heritage Plaque at the Gateway of the North located in Lee Park on Memorial Drive. The Gateway of the North arch was recently recognized as a priority one heritage site by the committee. A brief history of the site will be discussed at the plaque unveiling ceremony.

The original Gateway of the North project was initiated by the Associated Canadian Travelers, or A.C.T. The Gateway Arch is recognized as a well known landmark in North Bay. The arch once spanned Kennedy Avenue (now Lakeshore Drive), near Judge Avenue. The arch served the dual purpose of welcoming travelers to our region and marking the division point between what was once the Township of West Ferris and the City of North Bay.

The Municipal Heritage Committee has developed a plaque program that has seen over two dozen sites throughout the city recognized for their historic significance. The committee assesses he historical significance of several sites per year, adding to a growing heritage site inventory in North Bay.
