A group of local role playing game enthusiasts are hoping to take their game to the next level.

Craig Stevens, along with local enthusiasts Tristan Chapple and Kyle Charron are organizing a tabletop board game convention at the Best Western on September 23.

"We decided to create this event because we had been to other conventions like this and they were great," said Stevens.

"Meeting new people, trying out new games, and just having a fun time in a great atmosphere. So, we wanted to create an experience like that here in Northern Ontario. That way more people could have the same experience but locally."

The event will focus on role playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu and more.

Stevens says the interest in role playing games is growing.

"Role playing games are bigger than they've ever been thanks to companies putting out quality products, and mass media reminding/introducing people about Dungeons and Dragons and what a great time it can be," he said.

"Plus, after being in lockdown people want to connect with each other and feel like a community."

Stevens says despite the COVID lockdowns, technology allowed many of the players to still play virtually.

"Technology in role playing games really came to the forefront with COVID as it helped groups continue their weekly games," explained Stevens.

"It has really enriched the community since you can play with friends anywhere in the world. The ability to stream games online has also boosted the popularity over the last few years as people can watch and get a feel for the game before even playing."

Stevens says the local interest in role playing games is strong. An indication of that is some of the various businesses in town selling role playing games, board games and war games such as event sponsors Outpost Gaming, Darkhorse Comics and North Bay Games and Hobbies.

"North Bay has more stores than ever," added Stevens.

Stevens hopes hosting an event like this will take role playing game play to another level locally.

"We are hoping people will come out to this and have a great time and spread the positive energy," he said.

"We'd really like to see this grow and become something that gamers in Northern Ontario can look forward to each Fall."
