Frozen ground was a challenge, but Callander’s water break is fixed

The icy earth was no friend to the shovels, but the crew reached the pipe, found the crack, and repairs were made this morning

A water main cracked in Callander on Friday night, but the pipe has been repaired as of this morning.

The pipe lay under Main Street, between Swale and Catherine Streets. So, if you were experiencing low or inconsistent water pressure from your taps, that was the reason. For safety’s sake, the town also closed a section on Main Street as a lot of water was accumulating on the asphalt.

Callander’s Municipal Director, Ashley Bilodeau, noted a crew began digging on Saturday, but the ground was frozen deep, “So it took a whole day of digging just to get six feet into the ground.”

The digging continued throughout Sunday as well, Bilodeau added.

But the crew prevailed and found the source of the leak. A water main pipe, which has served the town since 1972, had a circumferential crack. Despite the crack, Bilodeau noted the ductile iron pipe is in great condition. The crew put a repair clamp around the pipe, and now the water is back on and pressure up to par. The street should be opened by day's end.
