Local anglers already know it, now the secret is out as the French River has claimed the number 10 spot for best fishing in Canada.
Calling it a "cherished body of water" Fishingbooker says The French River was the first to be recognized as a Canadian Heritage River.
"It’s an important historical, cultural, natural, and recreational treasure situated in Northeastern Ontario. As such, the river is the perfect getaway for history and outdoor enthusiasts. The area is also dotted with lodges, making the French River ideal headquarters for anglers with families."
The company does an annual list of Canada's best fishing holes. FishingBooker's list of 2024’s 10 best fishing destinations.
"When it comes to outdoor activities, head to French River Provincial Park and try anything from boating, canoeing, kayaking, whitewater paddling, sightseeing, and hiking to hunting and fishing – fishing being on top of the list, of course. Pike, Musky, Walleye, and Bass are some of the superstars that could grace the end of your line here."
"The French River cuts through the Canadian Shield, flowing through rapids, waterfalls, gorges and interconnected lakes on its journey from Lake Nipissing to Georgian Bay. Species such as the eastern Massassauga rattlesnake and yellow pickerel, along with eight rare plant species, live in its boreal forests. Another 450 plant species that represent both the boreal and the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest regions can be found along the river," says the website Canadian Heritage Rivers System.
The top destination in Canada according to the site, is Lake Ontario, followed by The Cowichan River, British Columbia and Bow River, Alberta.
Last year Lake Nipissing was ranked #1 best ice fishing destination in Canada, mainly because of its ice fishing, but didn't make the top 10 this year.
