As Lake Nipissing continues to rise, the North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority is warning that the French River may have to absorb higher levels.

"Water levels are being monitored continuously, and lake inflows and dam outflows are reassessed constantly," says the Authority's website. "There is strong potential that Lake Nipissing may exceed elevation 196.59m, and if it holds at or increases from that level, the dams at the French River will release additional flow to help mitigate further flooding on Lake Nipissing. The conditions on the Lake continue to change daily in response to changes in wind and precipitation from previous rain events still draining into Lake Nipissing."

On May 26, the Municipality of French River, declared a State of Emergency along the French River Watershed. OPP are reminding boaters to beware of debris in the water. All wharves and docks are under water in that area.

Reduce your speed not only for your safety but also to respect properties affected by the flood. The wake caused by a passing boat further erodes the shoreline causing more damage to properties.

The news is better for Mattawa.

"The Ottawa River at Mattawa read 155.07m this morning, up slightly from yesterday, showing a continued response to the recent rainfall.  Flows from Temiskaming Dam upstream are slowly being reduced, as water levels upstream on the Ottawa River are now beginning to decline, which is expected to result in a drop in water levels at Mattawa throughout the day."

Meanwhile, in West Nipissing, the municipality is warning motorists to stay off closed roads.

"Vehicle speeding and unnecessary driving on closed roads have been reported in flood-affected areas. The Municipality and Emergency Services strongly urge motorists to adhere to road closure signs to avoid making waves and causing additional damage to affected properties and roads. Local traffic is permitted for residents who need access to their primary residences only. Any other motorists travelling on closed roads can be fined under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act."
