Former Callander Mayor injured in fire

Former Callander Mayor Bill Brazeau and his son Ryan were both injured while battling a fire last week in Gravenhurst.

Former Callander Mayor Bill Brazeau and his son Ryan were both injured while battling a fire last week in Gravenhurst.

The two men, who are active firefighters with the Gravenhurst Fire Department, are being called "heroes" by their fire chief.

“We never know what to expect when responding to an emergency but the firefighters responded admirably to this very hostile environment, their actions were nothing short of heroic,” said Gravenhurst Fire Department Chief Larry Brassard in a news release.

The Brazeau’s responded with firefighters from two Gravenhurst stations to a mobile home fire on highway 11 in the Muskoka area.

The firefighters entered the building to save a person inside, but encountered a very hostile fire and were unsuccessful in bringing the occupant out alive.

Both men were sent to hospital with Bill Brazeau reportedly receiving burns to his hands and back.

The former Callander Mayor was receiving treatment at Sunnybrook in Toronto.

North Bay Mayor Al McDonald has stated on his Facebook page that he will be sending a get well card to the two on behalf of the city of North Bay.
