- 2009 marks the centennial of powered flight in Canada
- Laurentian Air Services, originally based in Ottawa, leased one of its bi-planes to Warner Bros. for the filming of 'Captains of the Clouds' and its chief pilot, Doug Pickering, spent quite a bit of time in North Bay
during the summer of 1941
- Local residents Doug Mackey, Rudy Mauro, and Brad Mackie are mentioned in *For the Love of Flying*
- This event is part of a cross-Canada book tour which includes speaking engagements at the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa and the Alberta Aviation Museum in Edmonton as well as bookstores, libraries, and clubs
About the Author
Author Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail, 27, grew up in Ottawa in a family of pilots and aviation enthusiasts. She has a B.A. in Canadian Studies from McGill University (2005) and an M.A. in history from the University of British Columbia (2007).
She returned to Ottawa in 2007 to research Laurentian Air Services and through extensive interviews and research she wrote the company’s colourful 60-year history, resulting in a book that noted aviation author and member of Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame Larry Milberry says “will delight any fan of our rich aviation heritage.”
She has authored numerous articles including a feature in 'The Beaver,'Canada’s History Magazine; articles in the journals of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society and Okanagan Historical Society; a feature for the Vintage Wings of Canada web site, among others.
