FIRST Team 1305 concludes successful season

Finishing 16th in Ontario, the team qualified to attend the World Championships in Houston, Texas. 1305 has qualified for the World Championships every year since its inception

A proclamation was read declaring May 13, FIRST Team 1305 day.  FIRST Team 1305, Near North Student Robotics Initiative, Ice Cubed, is using the opportunity to celebrate the end of another very successful FIRST  Robotics Competition season and thank th community for its continued generous support.

March 3 to 5, at the inaugural Newmarket District Event, 1305’s 2023 robot, Vector, played this year’s game, Charged Up, earning silver on the field.  1305 was also awarded the coveted Engineering Inspiration Award, which celebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team’s schools and community.

Student Executive Council member and team presenter, Tessa Summers, shares, “We were so excited to be awarded Engineering Inspiration. It was the support of our community that helped us get chosen for this award.”

Two weeks later at the Nipissing University District Event, Robot Vector, in alliance with the Hwy 11 corridor teams from Huntsville and Gravenhurst, won the event, gaining 1305’s 23rd blue banner in the team’s 20-year history.

1305 qualified for the Ontario District Championships to compete along with 79 other teams.  Finishing 16th in Ontario, the team qualified to attend the World Championships in Houston, Texas. 1305 has qualified for the World Championships every year since its inception. This year the team has chosen not to attend the Houston Champions, giving the spot to another Ontario team.

FIRST Team1305 Student Executive Council member Inuka Silva was one of five students in the province to be awarded FIRST Dean’s List Finalist. Inuka remarked, “I was honoured and humbled to be nominated for something as prestigious as the FIRST Dean’s List Award.”

After being awarded the Sustainability Award at Provincials, Student Executive Council member. Matthew Miners, commented, “With the team celebrating its 20th year of continued dedicated efforts to promote science, technology, and positive leadership via the FIRST program: It’s a full team effort. 1305 has been around for a long time and we are thankful that our alumni and community have provided a strong foundation for our team.”

FIRST Team 1305 encourages students to participate in the life-changing experiences offered through FIRST.  The team, composed of students from several area schools, is constantly looking for new recruits and new challenges.
