Firefighters respond to Kingsway Avenue fire (UPDATED)

Careless smoking believed to be the cause

Firefighters responded quickly to a fire in a home on Kingsway Avenue just off of Trout Lake Road.  The call came in around 9 a.m.

Firefighters, and city parks crews worked together with an off duty paramedic who got the lone resident - an elderly woman - out of the residence safely.

She was not injured.

"Fire crews were on scene within four minutes and very quickly and successfully extinguished the fire which had started in a piece of furniture and then extended into the structure of the home," stated Deputy Chief Greg Saunders.

A portion of Kingsway Avenue was blocked off by police (at the corner of Queensway and Kingsway) for close to a half hour as fire crews worked on the home.

Saunders believes the fire started due to careless smoking within the home.

No word on a damage estimate although Saunders believes the resident will be unable to return to the home until a significant restoration is complete.

The North Bay Fire Department recommends that if you are going to smoke to please do so responsibly.
